vernal equinox
By Margaret Lawrence
Location: Yarmouth High School (public viewing by appointment)
Vernal Equinox by Margaret Lawrence is one of three paintings in a show curated by writer and art critic Edgar Allen Beem for the new lobby at the Yarmouth Performing Arts Center. Edgar called the show “The Mother of All Art” Show because each of the artists, Margaret Lawrence, Grace DeGenarro, and Carol Bass, had children in high school at the time. The paintings were purchased and donated to the high school by Yarmouth Arts.
About the Artist: Intrigued by varying elements in the landscape, Margaret Lawrence’s paintings are developed by removing paint as much as by applying it. Through the give and take of painting, an image that was inspired by a specific place is transformed into a sense of place. This approach yields a rich and complex surface with deceptively complex colors. Her most recent works are dreamy landscapes derived from places she has visited. They are charged with emotion and mood.
Margaret has a background in nursing. In 1993 she earned her BFA with a concentration in painting at Maine College of Art in Portland.
She is represented in Maine by Greenhut Galleries.
