Pattern Memory (Red Mosaic)
By Grace DeGennaro
Location: Yarmouth High School (public viewing by appointment)
Pattern Memory (Red Mosaic) by Grace DeGennaro is one of three works in a show curated by writer and art critic Edgar Allen Beem for the new lobby at the Yarmouth Performing Arts Center. Edgar called the show “The Mother of All Art Show” because each of the artists, Grace DeGenarro, Margaret Lawrence, and Carol Bass, had children in high school at the time. The paintings were purchased and donated to the high school by Yarmouth Arts.
Artist’s statement: “I make paintings and watercolor drawings focusing on the symbolism of the circle and the square and the relation of each to a circle and the square and the relation of each to a vertical and horizontal axis, the cross of time and space. Circles symbolize the cosmos, and the squares delineate the special directions in our physical world. The cross is an underlying symbol of the four cardinal directions as they relate to the unfolding of the seasons, the turning of the day, and the four ages of man.”
