Jenny Prinn

My work tends to be bold, vibrant and colorful. I see, hear, and taste things every day that spark the genesis of my paintings. These experiences are then relayed on the canvas—color tells the story and composition provides the context.

My inspirations are everywhere. I find beauty in the little things, the regular things, the things that most people don’t see: the discarded trash on the side of the road, the sound of the wind in the trees; or the taste of the salty ocean on my lips. As I grow older and have experienced loss, I find that I am bewitched by the cyclical rhythms of nature, of how one landscape can tell a thousand different stories as the seasons change - of how everything changes while remaining the same.

My work is about these little or 'regular' moments of life. I try to capture their essence. To do this, I work from intuition, allowing color and basic mark-making to begin the conversation, I then respond by building the composition that provides the context. I am simultaneously fully engaged and completely disengaged during this process. It is necessary to suspend rational thinking and simply be present to allow the dialogue to unfold and the truth to be spoken—there is a certain visual hum that happens when the story has been told. It is my hope that the honesty and familiarity in my work resonates with its viewers.
