Double dip Rocksmith

By Jordan Smith

Location: Backyard sculpture garden at 317 Main Community Music Center, 317 Main Street, Yarmouth

Double Dip Rocksmith was made in 2006 and is part of Jordan’s penetration series.  It is carved from “antique” granite aka “freshwater pearl” (on the base) and jay granite on the vertical section.  The two stones that appear to be going through the top piece are locally sourced beach stones.  The rings represent the symbol of infinity and the reverberations through time and space caused by everything we as individuals do, like the way a body of water reacts to a stone being thrown into it.  These rings are carved using a high-powered torch which leaves almost a water-worn effect on the surface.  The piece is approximately 60” x 24” at its largest dimensions.

It was purchased by Jordan’s aunt Laura Richardson and her husband Dave Robinson and donated to 317 when they moved out of state.

Artist’s Statement: “Stone and I have a long and loving relationship. When I first developed the ability to pick things up and put them down, I played with rocks.  Over the years this has become an artistic obsession and I’m still learning new ways to manipulate and communicate with the material.

Whether it is a large installation or a small piece, each project has its own unique challenges and rewards.  I try to harness the raw power and beauty of the stone's natural state as an integral part of my work.  Listening to the stone is important to the harmony of my process.  I work with the stone intuitively rather than forcing it to become something it does not want to be.  In the end, the stone is transformed into a new state that evokes questions in the viewer and invites them to explore its mystery.”
