Marian makes pots in her studio in Yarmouth, Maine and has maintained a summer studio and gallery at Little Cranberry Island, Maine for 23 years. She has taught ceramics at Maine College of Art since 1985. Locally, she has work at Alison Evans Gallery in Yarmouth. “I make useful pots for two principal reasons: because I love to make them and because I believe using handmade things can enrich the lives of the users. I choose colors and designs that are rooted in nature: ocean, beach stones, moss and sky. I explore both pattern and symbols, often sprung from nature, in collaboration with the form to increase a sense of mystery. It is my intent to add to that my fascination with the material and ideas about function, as well as to reveal and honor the process. I see my pots as a bridge between art and daily life.”

Painting in acrylics allows me to rapidly render color, line and shapes into form. The texture of the paint adds an exciting physical experience to the process and sculptural dimension to the piece. I am interested in capturing the mood or feeling of the subject as I experienced it. I graduated from Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT in 1992 with a BA in Art and Economics. In 1999, I completed a a Certificate Degree in Graphic Design at Massachusetts College of Art while working at Little Brown & Co. in Professional Journals. I enjoy the creative problem solving process of design, but love to step away from the computer and paint.

I've been enchanted by patterns in the natural world since I was a small child. Now I am creating images and patterns that remind me of my earlier feelings of enchantment.

I have been painting in watercolors for a long time primarily for my own enjoyment. I have taken lessons from a variety of teachers both in the Boston and Cambridge area and here in Maine. The interior of Maine with barns, fields, animals and flowers is where I find the most inspiration. I also like still life using the ordinary things we see every day. Every now and then I will paint a scene near the ocean. My work has been shown at a private show in Boston and at The Norway Art Center, Yarmouth Frame & Gallery, The St. Bartholomew Art Show, and The Prout's Neck Art Show.
